When to see a medical doctor instead of a chiropractor

Chiropractic care helps with a lot, but not everything. These are the signs that mean you should call a physician or 911.

We would rather tell you honestly that chiropractic isn’t the right fit than treat something we shouldn’t. Every first visit includes screening for the warning signs below, and we refer patients to medical doctors every week.

Call 911 or go to an emergency room

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin

  • Sudden weakness in an arm or leg

  • The worst headache of your life, or a headache with confusion, vision changes or trouble speaking

  • Chest pain, or back pain with shortness of breath

  • Pain after a serious fall or car accident

See a physician soon

  • Back pain with fever, chills or unexplained weight loss

  • Pain that is worse at night and doesn’t change with position

  • A history of cancer with new back pain

  • Symptoms that keep getting worse despite care

How we work with your doctor

If we find something that needs medical attention, we explain why, send a summary of our findings, and help you get an appointment. Many patients see both a physician and a chiropractor, and good care often comes from that teamwork.

This article is general information, not medical advice or a diagnosis. Results vary from person to person. If you have sudden severe pain, weakness or numbness, call 911.
